Ensemble Modern
The Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt am Main is a world-class orchestral formation of contemporary
music. From 1997 to 2000 the Aventis Foundation - which was initially known as the Hoechst
Foundation – was one of the main backers of the newly formed Ensemble Modern Orchestra, the
symphonic formation. During this time, fascinating concerts and tours were held, including
in 1998 the very first tour conducted by Peter Eötvös, in 1999 a journey through American music
conducted by John Adams, and in 2000 a tour through six European cities conducted by George
Benjamin, Emilio Pomarico, and Yoichi Sugiyama.
The Aventis Foundation’s promotion of the Ensemble Modern ended according to plan at the end of
2000. Due to the very good and successful cooperation, the idea of financing a chair - a promotion
model that is widespread in the U.S. but largely unheard of in Europe and especially Germany - was
developed jointly. The Aventis Foundation is financing a "chair" in the orchestra. By financing the annual salary of one member of the
Ensemble Modern, the Aventis Foundation is funding a chair in the orchestra symbolically.
The hope is that the model character of "chair financing" will inspire other institutions
or private individuals to emulate the Aventis Foundation.
